Alpha-linolenic acid, as the main component of flaxseed oil, is a precursor and source of OMEGA-3 fatty acids, which the human body cannot produce. Alpha-linolenic acid in the body undergoes transformations that extend the carbon chain and add additional unsaturated bonds, leading to the formation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
One of the most important functions of α-linolenic acid in the human body is maintaining the proper cholesterol levels in the blood. A beneficial effect is achieved with a daily intake of 2 g of alpha-linolenic acid.
